First Backpacking Trip of the 2006 Season - June 26-28 - Red Pine Canyon

We decided to hike up Red Pine Canyon in the wasatch Mountains. We hiked up about 2-3 miles and camped within about 1/2 mile of the lower Red Pine Lake. We didn't get to that lake because it was virtually all snow walking to from our camp to the lake. Other people made it, but we decided to take another hike to some other lakes in Maybird Gulch where the snow was easier to bypass.

It took about 2 1/2 hours to get to our campsite with our 30-35 pound packs. You begin at the White Pine Trailhead (at 7,580 feet) and hike up about one mile where it then forks. At the fork hikers can take the White Pine Trail or the Red Pine trail.

View from our campsite. We were at approximately 9,000 feet here (the Red Pine Lake is about 9,600 feet):

Towards the end of the trail, Pfeifferhorn Peak comes into view:

At the end of the trail are two small lakes. They still have big pieces of glacial ice in them. The elevation here is 9,650 feet. We had to climb over a boulder field and walk a snow field to get over to the smaller lake.

On the way back down - waterfalls flowing out of snow is common:
